thehoot asked:

I am trying out the South Beach Diet and it has been a challenge since I am a total bread lover. What should I do if I finally caved in during Phase 1 and consumed bread? Do I recover myself the next day and continue on, or do I have to reset and start the two weeks all over again?

I am beginning to think the South Beach Diet is not for me, because I have not lost any weight in the 1st week that I was on Phase 1 (before finally having bread)

It doesn’t work if you don’t let it.

Listen, dieting isn’t about cutting out one thing to lose the weight. The only thing that will happen is that when you do lose the weight and you start eating ‘normal’ again you will just put the weight back on, fast. What you need to do is change how you eat. Eat bread, but whole wheat bread and pasta. Add more veggies to your diet. Eat 5-6 times a day. Eating small meals boosts your metabolism. When you eat 3 bigger meals that’s when some of it goes into reserves, otherwise known as fat. A meat portion is the equivalent to a deck of cards.

I lost almost 10 pds in less then 2 weeks just by changing my eating habits. I cut out soda completely. I DIDN’T cut out sugar. Your body craves it and when you don’t give into cravings then you will over do it when you do. Fake sugars only make you crave the real stuff more.

Diets do not work. 99% of people gain the weight back. No one teaches the animal what to eat and what not to eat. He knows instinctively what to eat. Humans also have the same instinct. The way it works is just eat whatever tastes good and that will be healthy for you and non-fattening. That is why a baby tastes everything. So again whatever tastes good, is good for you. This is why you will spit out spoiled milk.

But wait!!! Man has the technology to create rat poison. It tastes like healthy food (good taste) but kills the rat. So man has done that to you. Note– any food unaltered by man (uncooked) that tastes good, is good for you. So if you are stranded in the woods, that is how you know what to eat (cooking changes that). So man has created fake fruit. It tastes like fruit that exists in nature but it is terrrible for health, addictive and fattening called sweets.

So it is natural to like real sweets called fruit, like a baby does, but they have fooled you just like the rat. But they do not want to kill you. They want you to become obese so you will buy lots of their foods. This is called GOOD BUSINESS. Learn how to nourish your body thin, instead of starving your body fat. See site below.

I have been told by a doctor that the best way to lose weight is to have “well balanced meals.” no splurging, no eating more than what is allowed in the pyramid.

You can have deserts as long as they count towards the balanced meal pyramid.

    Good Luck!

I’ve been doing South Beach now for a long time. I really like how it is set up. Yes, the first phase is ruthless but one thing that is key is that you need carbs!!! Just because you can’t have bread or potatoes doesn’t mean you can’t have other good carbs in place of it. You can have beans (he has recipes in both recipe books), in chiles and you can have nuts. Cheese also has carbs. Make sure your meals are balanced with these things that you can only have a limited about of. Also, I’m a firm believer in good fat. Eat good fats, good oils and don’t go hungry. If that means your are eating every hour or two of the good food you can have in phase 1 then have them! Phase two is much better and you can enjoy fruit, and bread, potatoes sparingly (one a day is what I do) until you lose your weight then I’ve been eating good carbs (whole grains, nuts, potatoes, carrots, etc) and haven’t gained at all. Hang in there, if you cheat, DONT start over unless your cheating often. Just make the next day a new day until the end of the phase. Also, exercise and diet are the key to losing weight a feeling great. Good luck!

some people really NEED to cut out bread and most carbs at least for a while to get rid of cravings. Diabetics already do this so it is not new or dangerous. If you are one who can just eat a little bit of evrything, then fine , do it. But many people crave sugar and carbs and cannot stop after just a little. They may have metabolic syndrome, which is like a pre-diabetic state. IN this case, the body doesn’t handle carbs well causing spikes and dips in blood sugar levels, which casues more cravings and constant hunger. You could try weight watchers if you want a more conventional approach to losing weight. Personally I like Atkins which is a form of the South Beach diet as well. You add good carbs after weight loss to see what your body can tolerate. There is no ONE way to control overeating. Cutting out certain offending foods may be necessary at leat for a while.
