natasha j asked:

I want to lose my pregnancy weight and am planning on going on the south beach diet. I am still breastfeeding my daughter who is 1 year old now. The feeds are nap/ bedtime sleep related. 3 to 4 feeds per 24 hours. Is it safe to do so?

your milk may slow down if you lose weight too fast, but she’s 1 yr old, so that may be a good thing.

I haven’t done South Beach, but thought it is a pretty healthy way to eat. Ask you pediatrician. No sense taking any risk with the baby’s health.

Yes it is safe to do. The Southbeach diet is a well balanced diet. Just make sure you take your prenantal vitamin to insure the quality of your milk production during lactation.

at one your daughter no longer needs the boob. I do not care what anyone says, if a child does not need formula after one, they do not need to be breastfed either.

I’m glad you asked this question. I am going on 8 months breastfeeding and I am wanting to loose my pregnancy by going on a diet like that as well. As long as you are eating a balanced meal it is fine. Your daughter is a year so, she isn’t getting her primary nutrition from you anymore anyways. It is just a supplement. Good going on breastfeeding so long I am going to do the same thing. Formula is expensive.

Peditricans now say that a child is lucky to be breastfed for 2 full years, to all of you all that are fussing about breastfeeding for so long.

I’m doing the same thing in preparation for when my baby’s born, but I’m skiping phase one (very little to no carbs).

The reason for this is because the South Beach diet is very well balanced and says that you need the right kinds of foods in the right portions. Not only would this be healthy for you, but your daughter as well since she pretty much eats the processed nutrients of what you eat.

However, since you are breastfeeding, your body DOES need the carbs you would otherwise deny yourself in phase one. Just skip that part in the book and dive head first into phase two.

Also, be sure to get active. I know it’s hard when you’ve got a little one running around, but try to make some time to go to the gym (I bet daddy would love to spend an hour of quality time with his little girl!). Get into some sort of activity (yoga and pilates are GREAT for toning as well as losing weight). This will also aid in the last little bits of weight loss.

The best thing to do is to talk to your doctor. This goes for ANY diet and/or workout even if you are not breastfeeding or pregnant. They can talk to you about healthy amounts of weight to lose and any warnings or worries that may come up.

If you are planning on contunuing to breast feed, I wouldn’t. There are nutrients she may need that you may not get on the diet. If you really want to go on the diet, wean her off the breast then diet.

Yes it’s safe. South Beach is a very balanced diet. The only thing is, you can’t do phase 1 (the very strict starting phase) - it’s a little too restrictive and baby may not get all her nutrients that way.

If you think about it, on phase 2 of the diet, you’ll just be cutting out the sugar, junk food and high GI foods, and that can only be good for you and baby! You’ll eat low fat protein, loads of veggies and high-fibre carbs.

    Good luck!
